We can all agree, the American people are resilient in times of crisis. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen overwhelming support from our nation’s businesses, manufacturers, producers, and nonprofits who have boldly stepped into the fray and have taken a leading role in providing necessary equipment and aid to those on the front lines. Hanes Brands, a primary manufacturer in North Carolina’s Fifth District, switched its production of t-shirts to create FDA-approved face masks. Samaritans Purse, a nonprofit headquartered in Boone, dispatched volunteers and essential equipment to New York City to provide relief to first responders, doctors, and nurses. A large group of manufacturers and nonprofits led by the Carolina Textile District (CTD) are transforming their production lines to manufacture medical supplies for various healthcare providers. These stories – along with countless others in communities across our country – underscore the sheer magnitude of American ingenuity in action.
But the task of defeating COVID-19 is not solely consigned to a specific business or entity. Truck drivers, hospital workers, couriers, first responders, and everyday Americans have come to the aid of those in need and have delivered ten-fold. The road that lies ahead may be long, but I remain confident that our collective effort and spirit will continue to propel us forward.
Rest assured, I will continue to work with my colleagues in the House of Representatives, the Administration, and all appropriate state and federal agencies to ensure that the livelihoods of American families, small businesses, and workers remain protected. For the most up-to-date information on COVID-19, the stimulus bill that was recently passed by Congress, and on resources for small businesses and employees that are available online, visit my website.
New Scam Update
On Monday, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein warned of a wave of scams targeting North Carolinians that is on the horizon. New reports indicate that North Carolinians receiving stimulus checks as part of the federal government’s COVID-19 response are being targeted by scammers. The newest reported incidents involve phishing scams that request banking information or personal identification. From fake insurance agents to robocalls, online fraud to price gouging, the range of emerging scams is growing rapidly.
Remember that exercising diligence online, over the phone, in person, or over email is of the utmost importance. Do not hesitate to contact the North Carolina Department of Justice if you suspect that you have been targeted by scammers. The more you communicate about these issues to the appropriate authorities, the better. These bad actors will continue to defraud vulnerable Americans, and it’s our duty to stop them in their tracks.
