Article II, Section III, Clause I of the United States Constitution states that the President “shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”
When our Founding Fathers laid the framework for the State of the Union; we didn’t have radio or television, and we certainly didn’t have the internet or Twitter. Now, the State of the Union is a large-scale production that takes place on the world stage. Some years are better than others.
The vision that President Trump shared with Americans during his first State of the Union was the most uplifting speech I have heard to date. As President Trump detailed his vision for building a safe, strong, and proud America, he assured attendees and viewers that now is the time for our new American moment. I look forward to continuing work with the Administration and my colleagues as we consider legislation that will help us all achieve the American dream.

Focus on the Facts:
Every year pundits and talking heads spend hours of coverage dedicated to previewing and dissecting the State of the Union speech. While the commentary is at times entertaining, it is oftentimes lacking in substance. Often we hear a group of the media elite critique the speech before the President even steps into the House Chamber. This year, I encouraged viewers and the media to focus on the facts.

President Trump
On Tuesday, President Trump proclaimed that, “The state of our union is strong because our people are strong.” I couldn’t agree more. Want to learn more about my thoughts on President Trump? Click here:

Snapshots from SOTU
Each Member of Congress has the privilege of inviting one guest to the State of the Union. This year, I was honored to invite my constituent and small-business owner Mr. Ron Joyce of Lewisville, North Carolina. Many Members of Congress brought small-business owners to highlight the importance of the tax reform bill.

Speaker Tim Moore
It was a pleasure to meet with the North Carolina Speaker, Tim Moore, on the day of the State of the Union. I commend Speaker Moore on all of his many efforts to reform the tax code and make North Carolina one of the most competitive states to do business in. As the U.S. House recently passed the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, we had a lot to chat about!

What’s Coming Up
Next week, the House will take up H.R. 1153, the Mortgage Choice Act. This legislation endeavors to restore a full and open competitive market for consumers by providing more clarity and choices for consumers when deciding on credit providers and settlement service options. The House is also set to take up my legislation, H.R. 3851, the War Crimes Rewards Expansion Act, to reform an existing program to maximize the prosecution of the world’s worst human rights abusers in domestic settings – according to U.S. standards – not just in international tribunals.
Sincerely,
