Foxx Report for the Week of March 12, 2018 |
|
One of the many important tasks that Members of Congress engage in is improving the way our government does business. In 1995, Congress passed the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act (UMRA) to combat onerous and costly federal unfunded mandates.
Unfortunately, we have watched this practice grow unchecked year after year. Many states and localities still struggle to implement unfunded federal laws and regulations and do so only at considerable cost to state and local taxpayers. That’s why I introduced H.R. 50, the Unfunded Mandates Information and Transparency Act (UMITA). This week, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform favorably reported H.R. 50 which addresses UMRA’s shortcomings by providing openness and honesty about the cost of regulations.
Upon passage, my bill will ensure that state and local governments will no longer be forced to choose between two bad options – raising taxes or eliminating services – to comply with federal unfunded mandates. Learn more here by clicking the image below:
Protecting Life
It is vital to stand each day in support of the culture of life. This week, I spoke on the House Floor about the lifesaving and life-affirming work that pro-life pregnancy centers provide. It is my life’s greatest honor to represent the 5th District of North Carolina, which includes the New Hope Pregnancy Compassion Care Center in Yadkinville, and it was a privilege to share the testimony of one young woman who relied on this lifesaving pregnancy center. Protecting Students
To protect our students, we must work to prevent school violence. This week, I was pleased to support H.R. 4909, the STOP School Violence Act of 2018. We all believe our children must be safe in school, and students and families need to feel confident that schools are secure environments.
The STOP School Violence Act of 2018 is an important step in further ensuring the safety of our future leaders. This bipartisan bill will give school districts and local communities the support necessary to provide students with a safer learning environment and supportive services to prevent future tragedies. What’s Coming Up Next?
Next week, the House will continue its efforts in bringing about commonsense financial regulatory reform for our nation’s small banks, credit unions and businesses. Furthermore, the House will consider H.R. 5247. Also known as the “Right to Try Act,” this bill will create alternative pathways for terminally-ill patients to gain access to new, potentially lifesaving treatments.
Sincerely,
