House Republicans remain steadfast in our commitment to restore law and order. Last week, we secured a monumental victory for the American people when President Biden announced he would sign H.J.Res.26, legislation that House Republicans passed in February that would block radical and misguided amendments from being fully adopted in Washington, D.C.’s criminal code. Yes, you read that correctly. These proposed changes were the brainchild of bureaucrats on the D.C. City Council, and if they were to have come to fruition, maximum penalties for individuals charged with committing violent crimes would be reduced.

So that you can understand the full scope of the D.C. City Council’s now defunct Revised Criminal Code Act of 2022, here are a few topline facts courtesy of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability:

  • It would have eliminated mandatory minimum sentences for all crimes except first degree murder.
  • It would have eliminated life sentences and reduces maximum penalties for violent crimes, such as burglary, carjackings and robberies.
  • It would have expanded the right to a jury trial to include most misdemeanors.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate passed H.J.Res.26 with bipartisan support, and it was sent straight to the President’s desk for his signature. I’m immensely proud not only to have served as a cosponsor of this joint resolution which came out of the Government Oversight and Accountability Committee, on which I serve, but also having voted in favor of it when it came before the House. In my newsletter to you on February 24th, I highlighted the unprecedented crime wave that has battered the nation and the consequences of soft-on-crime that are championed by President Biden and his Democrat allies in Congress. House Republicans will continue to advance commonsense legislation to restore law and order in our great country.

Accountability Is Here

This week, the House passed the COVID-19 Origin Act of 2023, legislation led by Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Mike Braun (R-IN) that would require the Biden administration to declassify intelligence related to any potential links between the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and the origins of the COVID pandemic. The American people have been asking simple questions on this issue for three years, and they have gone unanswered. This is entirely unacceptable. This bill is now headed to President Biden’s desk – the latest in Republican victories to hold his administration accountable.

Safeguarding Parental Rights

This past week, I joined House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), a panel of Committee Republicans, and concerned parents to discuss how the Parents Bill of Rights gives power back to parents and reinforces their role in the decision-making process when it comes to their children’s education. The education bureaucracy has branded parents with a scarlet letter – as if to suggest that these dedicated moms and dads are nothing more than radicals who should be pushed away from their child’s educational growth and personal development. I find this to be not only abhorrent, but also entirely antithetical to the values that we espouse as Americans.
