The education bureaucracy is on notice. This morning, the House passed H.R. 5, the Parents Bill of Rights Act, legislation that will safeguard the constitutional rights of parents, and their God-given right to make decisions for their children. For far too long, these proud moms and dads, the greatest stakeholders in our country’s future, have been censored by the education bureaucracy. House Republicans will not tolerate the Left’s attempt to push parents out of the decision-making process when it comes to their child’s education.

There are five key, commonsense pillars that make up this monumental piece of legislation:

  • Parents have the right to know what schools are teaching.
  • Parents have the right to protect their child’s privacy.
  • Parents have a right to be heard.
  • Parents have the right to see the school budget and spending.
  • Parents have the right to keep their children safe.

Many different legislatures across the country have put forth similar efforts on the state level – and our efforts complement theirs – so that parents are not prevented from exercising their duty as stakeholders in their children’s education. From their earliest days as an infant to when they begin their formal educational journey, and beyond, children look up to their parents and see people who will fight tooth and nail to protect them. We should always recognize and respect that parents are the true guardians for their children – they work every day to nurture them, teach them, and help them grow into productive leaders of our society. This legislation will usher in a new era of education—one where parents won’t take a back seat to the government system. One thing is certain, our children and the country will be better off for having the Parents Bill of Rights.

My Newest Letter

This week, I sent a letter to Dr. Kurt Newman, President and CEO of the Children's National Hospital, expressing concerns about "the erosion of parents' rights" and the use of "life-altering, irreversible medical interventions on children" at the hospital’s Youth Pride Clinic. Here’s a short excerpt:

"Unfortunately, there are people who want to override parents' decisions. Their efforts result in the erosion of parents' rights to make medical decisions for their children. … I write to seek information and answers to several questions related to the Children’s National Hospital (Hospital) Youth Pride Clinic (Clinic), promoted as 'one of the few clinics in the nation providing comprehensive primary and mental healthcare to LGBTQ youth and young adults between the ages of 12 to 22.'"
