Foxx Report

Providing for the common defense of the United States of America is the federal government’s primary responsibility. This week the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017, which maintains the nation’s defense readiness and ensures the continued success of our military personnel by providing them with the best equipment, skills development and compensation.

The House also approved legislation to fund our nation’s military bases and the Department of Veterans Affairs for fiscal year 2017. The bill includes funding to house, educate and equip military personnel, provide housing and services to military families and help maintain base infrastructure as well as funding for veterans’ benefits and programs.

New Overtime Rules

The Labor Department’s new rules on overtime are another egregious example of the burdensome regulations that continue to hamper our economic recovery and hold North Carolina families back. Once again unelected Washington bureaucrats have harmed the employees they claim to advocate for by removing flexibility in the workplace, which could lead to cutting the pay or limiting the hours of workers. Regulators also ignored the concerns of employers that their regulations will make it more difficult for hardworking Americans to operate their businesses and provide career advancement opportunities for their employees.

National Police Week

For more than 50 years, May 15th has been recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. During National Police Week, we honor those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. In 2016, 252 fallen law enforcement heroes were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Their sacrifice is not forgotten and their families remain in our prayers during this week of remembrance.

The men and women who dedicate their lives to law enforcement not only keep our families safe, they also help to preserve the way of life we hold so dear. They walk the neighborhood beats, patrol our streets and willingly do the dangerous work that makes our lives safer. They deserve our gratitude today and every day.

Veterans Information Session

On Friday, June 17, I will host an information session for veterans from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the VFW Post 9010, 4675 Hampton Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. Representatives from nonprofit organizations and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will be on hand to answer questions from veterans and their families as well as provide information and guidance regarding obtaining available benefits.

The entire nation owes our military personnel and veterans a huge debt of gratitude, and ensuring that debt is properly repaid is one of my top priorities in Congress. It is always an honor to assist veterans from the 5th District in any way possible, and I hope they find this event informative and beneficial.

Teacher in Congress

Applications are now being accepted for the 10th annual Teacher in Congress Internship. This internship was created to offer educators a glimpse of the workings of Congress and the federal government while experiencing the day-to-day life of a member of Congress. By supplying teachers with hands-on opportunities, the internship will help local schools enhance their civics and history curriculum.

The paid internship will take place in my Washington office from July 8-15, 2016. Preference will be given to applicants who live in the 5th District, teach at a public or private school in the 5th District and teach grades 9-12 during the 2016-2017 school year. Applications are available online at www.foxx.house.gov/teachers. Applicants should submit a completed 2016 Teacher in Congress Internship application form, accompanied by a cover letter, resume and sample lesson plan by June 3, 2016. Completed applications may be submitted via email to TeacherInCongress@mail.house.gov or by U.S. mail to U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, Attn: Teacher in Congress, 3540 Clemmons Road, Suite 125, Clemmons, NC 27012.
