Last Sunday the United States of America suffered the worst terrorist attack on our soil since 9/11, leaving 49 people dead and dozens more wounded. As a nation, we mourn the loss of innocent lives in Orlando and pray for the swift recovery of those who were injured.
Islamic State and other terrorist groups pose a continuing threat to the United States and Americans throughout the world. As the dangers that our country faces evolve, our efforts to combat them must do likewise. The world has become more dangerous and our enemies more complex, and America’s leadership is needed on the world stage now more than ever.
Providing for the Common Defense of the United States of America
Providing for the common defense of the United States of America is the federal government’s primary duty and we must be vigilant, determined and united in full support of our military personnel. This week the House passed legislation that would fund a number of important resources for America’s military personnel and their families. H.R. 5293, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2017, would provide $517.1 billion for the nation’s military and defense initiatives as well as $58.6 billion for overseas contingency operations. It provides a 2.1 percent pay raise for service members, which is above President Obama’s request of 1.6 percent.
A Better Way
Last week Speaker Ryan announced the arrival of “A Better Way,” the policy agenda that House Republicans have been constructing all year. On Tuesday House Republicans unveiled a plan to grow our economy by tackling excessive regulations, developing American energy and promoting financial independence for people who work hard and do the right thing. On Thursday we revealed our initiative to restore self-government and the separation of powers. The remaining planks of the agenda will be introduced in the weeks to come. Protecting Nonprofits from IRS Targeting
Taxpayers shudder at the mere mention of the IRS, and that image hasn’t been helped since the federal government’s most feared agency admitted to singling out conservative groups for unprecedented, invasive scrutiny. On Tuesday the House passed legislation that prohibits the IRS from requiring nonprofit organizations to include information on contributors in annual filings.
As Americans, we expect our government to preserve, protect and defend our rights - not target them for political gain and control. The legislation we passed will further curb the ability of the IRS to hinder free speech and civic participation among the public.
U.S. Service Academy Appointments
North Carolina’s 5th District has a proud tradition of military service. Each year it is an honor to nominate some of the area’s finest young people to attend America’s prestigious military academies and contribute to this legacy. These appointments are a testament to their hard work, discipline and strong desire to serve our country.
Thor Gignac of Kernersville, Joel Schneider of Winston-Salem and Daniel “Walt” Williams IV of Lewisville will attend the U.S. Naval Academy. Luke Herman of Boone will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. Ean McCool of Lewisville and Isaac McMillan of East Bend will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Next week the House will consider the Separation of Powers Restoration Act of 2016.
