America’s legacy of enduring freedom and prosperity is due to the selfless sacrifices of the men and women who have proudly served in our armed forces. The strength and unity of our nation is not built by brick and mortar, but is built by our collective vision that America remains the shining city upon a hill that has been – and continues to be – protected by brave patriots. Our veterans have fought to protect that vision, and to protect generations of Americans to come. Their sacrifices must never be forgotten.
On Memorial Day, we remember their heroism, their love for our great country, and the sacrifices that they have made. We commend the veterans who are still with us today, and it is imperative that they are provided with the care they deserve. During my time in the United States House of Representatives, I have regularly held information sessions for veterans and their families in the Fifth District. In these meetings, we have discussed healthcare, education, and financial assistance opportunities. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these information sessions have been suspended out of caution for the health and safety of attendees. However, I can assure you that my work for our veterans continues without delay, and I will continue to provide updates on legislation passed by Congress that is important to you.
Over the past year, Congress has worked diligently to ensure that the needs of our veterans are met and that the benefits that they have fought to earn are there for them when they need them most. The House of Representatives has passed eight bills to help our veterans such as the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2019, the Supporting Veterans in STEM Careers Act, and the Support for Suicide Prevention Coordinators Act.
Furthermore, on June 25th of last year, President Trump signed into law H.R. 299, the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act. This bill extends the presumption of service-connected exposure to Agent Orange to veterans who served in the Blue Water Navy at the time. This bill enables veterans to access health benefits and disability compensation they desperately need in the wake of their service to the United States.
We are blessed to live in the world’s finest republic, and we should never take it for granted. Let us come together and reflect on our freedom, those who have defended it, and its cost. Our country is built by the sacrifices of everyday men and women who believe in the promise that America holds. Though many of them are not here with us today, it is our solemn duty to carry on their mission by protecting America’s prosperity in their stead.
Have A Blessed Memorial Day.
