Foxx Report for the Week of December 11, 2017 |
|
There is no question that lifelong learning enables Americans to pursue the lives they want for themselves. That pursuit of knowledge is not always best developed on a semester-by-semester basis though. The experience that today’s students need to succeed is gained in a variety of different programs. Sometimes it’s a two, four, or six year degree and sometimes a student needs an alternative path. With six million jobs unfilled and more than a trillion dollars of student debt, what is clear is that our higher education system desperately needs reform.
This week the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, of which I am the Chairwoman, considered H.R. 4508, the Promoting Real Opportunity, Success, and Prosperity through Education Reform (PROSPER) Act. After a marathon of considering amendments to the first real reform in Higher Education at the federal level since 1965, I feel very confident that we will ultimately foster a higher education system that works for the students and families of today and tomorrow.

Tis the Season
As we approach Christmas, many of us consider the season of giving and also think of Christmas cookies. When we think about giving back and cookies, we’d be remiss not to consider the Girl Scouts. It’s important to note that Girl Scouts do more than sell cookies. They actively work to improve their communities all year long. Here is a story about five extraordinary young women’s efforts to give back.

Holidays for Heroes
The nation’s servicemembers who are deployed abroad should never doubt our gratitude for their selfless sacrifice. This week, I was honored to participate in the Holiday Mail for Heroes event, sponsored by the American Red Cross. I enjoyed writing Christmas Cards to the brave men and women who safeguard our freedoms.

What’s Coming Up
Next week, the House is expected to vote on the Conference Report of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The report includes the finalized tax relief package, which resolves differences between the House and Senate tax reform legislation. I look forward to supporting this legislation that will bring about a simpler, fairer tax code for hardworking Americans. Additionally, the House is expected to consider H.J. Res. 124 which will set the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2018 and fund the federal government through January 19th, 2018.
Sincerely,
