The best part of the August district work period is getting to travel the 5th District and hear real concerns from North Carolinians. It is my honor to receive input from constituents and bring their concerns with me back to Washington. According to the mainstream media, Congress hasn't accomplished anything this year. This could not be further from the truth! That's why I spent a portion of the August District Work Period on my "Did You Know?" Tour. On this Tour, I was able to discuss the many "wins" House Republicans have racked up since the beginning of the year as well as address the broad scope of our policy objectives. For instance, a little known fact is that House Republicans have passed more bills since the beginning of this administration than all four previous incoming presidential administrations. While crisscrossing the 5th District I was able to meet with students, veterans, teachers, and business owners alike.
Rather than hearing about sensationalized headlines, or partisan rhetoric, I heard from countless constituents about their desire to get our economy back on track and the overwhelming need for tax reform. When Congress returns this month, we will consider legislation that will bring our antiquated tax system into the current century. We will also consider legislation that will determine the funding of our government and address Harvey Disaster aid relief. While we have a lot to accomplish, I look forward to using the feedback I received during the August district work period as I cast my vote on upcoming legislation.
Did You Know? #NC05 Tour
During the August district work period, I attended or hosted more than 70 meetings with constituents and local businesses. Here are some photos from this district work period, and my “Did You Know?” Tour.
It was an honor to offer the Commencement Speech at the Appalachian State University Commissioning Ceremony. Five cadets were commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants and I could not be more grateful or proud of their service. Congratulations to Ojo Babalola, Darlene Girardeau, Nickolas Leonard, Jared Stratton and Brian Wilson.

Each year, I hold an informational session for 5th District veterans. This year’s session was a tremendous success. My office worked with nonprofit organizations and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure that we could assist veterans from the 5th District on a wide variety of issues. While we can never repay the debt we owe to our nation’s veterans, it is an honor to assist 5th District veterans every day of the year.
This work period, I was pleased to visit the Appalachian Theater renovation project in downtown Boone. Built in 1938, this theater has hosted many 5th District residents as they take in the arts. It was a pleasure hearing about the project from John Cooper and Frank Mohler.

As a part of my “Did You Know?” Tour, I addressed the Hickory Young Professionals. I was pleased to answer their questions concerning the economy, and offer remarks about what actions House Republicans have taken in order to secure their economic future.
While in Kernersville on my “Did You Know?” Tour, I had the opportunity to address the Kernersville Rotary. As a former Rotarian, I know how important a role the Kernersville Rotary plays in the community. That’s why I was honored to share with the members about the good-government bills my colleagues and I have successfully passed in Washington.
What’s coming up?
This week, the House will take up appropriations legislation to fund our government for Fiscal Year 2018. Additionally, the House will consider legislation pertaining to increased FEMA funds in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
