Our nation’s veterans deserve our respect for answering the call to take up arms and defend America. This Veterans Day, we honor those who remain a reflection of American greatness and patriotism. On Saturday, we rightly pay homage to the veterans who have served our nation. However, in my opinion, we should be paying tribute to these brave men and women every day. As many of you celebrate a day off work, I hope you will join me in finding ways to thank a veteran.
Save Local Business
As a former owner of a small business, I know first-hand how disastrous government interference can be. On Tuesday, the House took action to roll back harmful Obama-era regulations enacted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). In 2015, unelected bureaucrats at the NLRB hurt working families and small businesses by redefining employer-employee relationships when it issued the “Joint Employer” rule. This made franchisors and staffing agencies legally culpable for local franchisee decisions, and was an unprecedented attack on American small businesses, stifling the entrepreneurial spirit of many who hoped to enter into the business arena.
In order to make it easier, not harder, for hardworking taxpayers to own a business, employ others, and achieve the American Dream, the House passed H.R. 3441, the Save Local Business Act, to clarify what constitutes a “Joint Employer” under federal labor law.
This ensures that entrepreneurs will once again be empowered to take risks, start businesses and pursue their dreams. To read more about the Save Local Business Act, click here.
A Sweet Deal
For many years, the U.S. government’s sugar program has served as a job-killer. This antiquated program is rooted in supply-management economics and operates at a substantial cost to taxpayers. After examining the way the sugar commodity program is set up, outside observers have found that it shifts $3 billion of extra costs unto businesses and consumers annually, and, if left unchecked, will cost taxpayers over $100 million dollars in bailouts over the next ten years.
The time is ripe to reform the sugar program, and I introduced bipartisan legislation this week that will do just that. When the Sugar Policy Modernization Act passes, American taxpayers will no longer be on the hook for a sugar-sweet giveaway that picks winners and losers in the marketplace and goes against the very spirit of our free-market economy. It’s time to end the sweet deal that sugar processors enjoy in this country. Please follow me on Facebook to keep up with my efforts.

What’s Coming Up
Next week, the House will take up the conference report to this year’s national defense authorization bill, finishing Congress’s work in its most important duty – protecting our citizens. Furthermore, the House will continue its work on a comprehensive rewrite of the tax code that brings substantial tax relief to families and prosperity back to America’s shores.
Sincerely,
