Americans are downright fed up with inflation. Everywhere I travel in the Fifth District, I hear the same refrain from everyone that I meet: Everything is costing more. I share their anger, and I take great issue with where the direction of this country is headed. Americans have been told to “lower their expectations” and get used to doing with less. No, we won’t. This is America, and we do not settle for less. We’re better than meeting meager expectations, lowering the bar, and expecting less.

Speaking of inflation, have you heard about President Biden’s new Turkey Tax that will be hitting families as they prepare for Thanksgiving? Consider this: Thanksgiving dinner this year is estimated to cost four to five percent more for American families, and that’s assuming they’ll be able to afford putting food on the table. To help illustrate this rise in prices, let’s look at a few Thanksgiving favorites that are now going up in price:

  • Turkey prices are up to $1.36 per pound.
  • Russet potato prices are up 3.5%.
  • Biscuit prices are up 4%.
  • Mixed vegetable prices are up 3.8%.
  • Apple pie prices are up 7.8%.

Think again about American families and the situation they find themselves in as we move closer to Thanksgiving. Will they be able to afford President Biden’s Turkey Tax on Thanksgiving dinner? Will they even be able to get themselves to the grocery store in time before the shelves are empty? Will they even be able to get to the grocery store at all because of rising gas prices? These are the questions that so many people are asking.

Let me be clear, inflation is not a “high class problem”. It’s a problem that everyone is facing especially as we head into the holiday season. Is this administration so blind to the fact that families and hardworking Americans are struggling to make ends meet? At this rate, Christmas dinner will cost an arm and a leg. You can rest assured that I will continue to call out this administration for its failed policies that have led us to this point. There must be accountability, and I’m working hard to ensure that.

Illegal Immigrant Payouts

In a recent report, the Wall Street Journal revealed that the Department of Justice, under the direction of the Biden Administration, is spearheading an effort to give illegal immigrants $450,000 per person. More than 1,000 claimants have already lined up to join a settlement that if completed would reach over $1 billion in payouts – close to $1 million per parent and child. To put this into context, if a servicemember is killed in action, their next of kin receives an insurance payment of $400,000. That’s right, illegal immigrants would be receiving more money than Gold Star families. That’s repulsive.

New Scam Alert

The North Carolina Utilities Commission and the North Carolina Movers Association are issuing a warning about moving scams. As a utility in North Carolina that’s considered to be regulated, people should always pay attention to both certifications and licensing from companies they are looking to hire for moving services. Here are a few tips that can help you avoid these kinds of scams:

  • Do your research on reputable companies in your area before making the decision to hire one for your moving needs.
  • If there are moving costs that require close to a 50% deposit up front, and not a small reservation fee, it’s likely you are dealing with a brokerage company and not a legitimate moving service.
  • Always ensure that a mover is both insured and protected since they have full possession of your items at the time of moving.
