H.R. 1, the so-called For The People Act, was blocked in the Senate this week – a huge loss for federal bureaucrats who are hellbent on federalizing the elections system in the United States. For months, I’ve heard from, and responded to, many concerned constituents within the Fifth District about H.R. 1. Yes, it was a dangerous piece of legislation, but too few people really knew about the poison pills that were lurking within it. I’m going to recap some of the most concerning provisions in H.R. 1 and shed light on facts that you may not have known. Here are the top five facts:
- H.R. 1 would have banned state voter I.D. laws and allowed individuals without an I.D. to sign a written statement claiming they are who they say they are.
- H.R. 1 would have established a “Commission to Protect Democratic Institutions” that would be given the authority to exert influence over judges and would threaten judicial independence.
- H.R. 1 would have removed the states’ ability to decide how their districts are drawn by creating redistricting commissions for creating congressional districts and removing states’ flexibility to choose the best systems for the needs of their citizens.
- H.R. 1 would have made “pandemic style” elections changes permanent such as the rapid expansion of mail-in voting.
- H.R. 1 would have limited access to federal courts for any individual or group seeking to challenge its constitutionality.
As I mentioned to you in my March 5th newsletter, I voted NO on this catastrophe of a bill when it was before the House. Congressional overreach in free and fair elections is the last thing the American people want, and I refuse to sit idly by while the federal government attempts to stick its nose where it does not belong.
Put American Students First
On Tuesday, I joined the Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, Representative Jason Smith (R-MO), in sending a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona demanding transparency into the use of federal funds issued to K-12 and higher education institutions by the Department of Education.
American students are not guaranteed an in-person education in this country, yet Secretary Cardona is plotting to use taxpayer dollars to fund non-citizens’ education. This administration is pursuing America last policies that will lead to federal bankruptcy, learning loss, mental health decline for students, and privileges for non-citizens on the taxpayer’s dime. I hope Secretary Cardona will allow for proper oversight by thoroughly responding to our request and, ultimately, commit to building an in-person education system that works for those who legally live and work here.

ICYMI: My Op-Ed with State Senator Carl Ford
Recently, I joined North Carolina State Senator Carl Ford in penning an op-ed in the Carolina Journal about the new threat of union coercion that looms over hardworking North Carolinians. You may recall from my March 12th newsletter that Washington Democrats are pushing the so-called Protect the Right to Organize (PRO) Act that would put American workers last while lining the pockets of powerful union bosses. Right now, union membership in the United States is in a freefall – a clear sign that hardworking Americans are fed up with increasing disenfranchisement within unions. The numbers do not lie.
