Bureaucrats in Washington have no respect for the hard-earned tax dollars of Americans – time and again this has been proven to be true. Wild and irresponsible spending binges, a serious lack of deference to the American taxpayer, and nonexistent accountability were the hallmarks of the previous administration, and there is a plethora of examples I could highlight to support this fact. There’s a tidbit of news that came out earlier this week related to one such spending binge by the previous administration, and I want to make sure you know about it. This is a topic that I’ve spoken about many times over – especially when I was Chair of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
President Biden’s so-called “Saving on a Valuable Education” (SAVE) plan was officially terminated by a federal appeals court on Monday, thereby terminating this entire scheme. When this scheme was hatched by the Biden administration, it was billed as the “most affordable repayment plan ever created” for federal student loan borrowers. What was not mentioned – not in the slightest – was how much it would cost taxpayers in the long run. Care to take a guess as to how much hardworking taxpayers would be on the hook for if the SAVE plan had been fully implemented and not struck down? $559 BILLION! It was the most expensive regulation in our nation’s history.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
THIS SCHEME WAS ILLEGAL FROM THE VERY START.
Back in 2023, Democrats had tried so desperately to pass their socialist free college fantasy through Congress, and it failed. So, what did they decide was a better option to pursue? They chose to shove it down the throats of the American people through executive fiat – that was their plan on how to reshape postsecondary education, and it was downright shameful. If the SAVE plan were allowed to survive, mountains upon mountains of debt would be left at the feet of taxpayers while millions of borrowers would get off scot-free and be absolved of their loans. Thankfully, with this week’s decision, that frightful reality will no longer be the case. Good riddance.
Fighting for Education Freedom
On Monday, I joined Education Secretary Linda McMahon, a friend and fellow North Carolinian, in High Point to highlight how Republicans are leading the way when it comes to unleashing education freedom through the Education Freedom Tax Credit. This is an issue that we should continue to put our time and efforts into supporting because it matters to families across North Carolina and the nation. Without education freedom – and policies like the Education Freedom Tax Credit that underpin it – our nation’s future leaders and their families will find themselves tethered to options that do not meet their unique needs. Education is a great equalizer in this country – it certainly was for me and can be for countless others.

A Piece of American History
On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry, one of the Founding Fathers and a renowned political speaker, addressed the Second Virginia Convention at St. John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia during a pivotal moment in the conflict with the British. At this time, British tyranny was on the rise and confidence amongst Americans was on a downward slope. Patrick Henry’s address to the convention was a battle cry – one that sought to rally Americans to take up arms, take a stand for freedom, and snuff out the oppression and coercion of the British. In his address, there was an immortal line that, to this day, remains etched in the pages of history: “Give me liberty or give me death!”.
