Democrats and government shutdowns go together like peach cobbler and ice cream. Here’s the proof: just in the last few months, Democrats in Washington shut down the government three times to appease their unsatiable leftist base. Even if you do not watch the day-to-day business of the People’s House and the U.S. Senate, you can tell rather easily that this has become a pattern – and a dangerous one at that. Let’s look at the facts.

As you have likely heard or read about, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently shut down because Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats have decided to hold funding for this agency hostage at the behest of their radical left base. This comes AFTER the House passed a bipartisan, bicameral funding bill – developed WITH the Senate Democrats – to ensure that DHS remains fully operational. This shutdown is impacting the livelihoods of hardworking Americans on the front lines and treating them as pawns in a shameful display of partisan gamesmanship. Beyond that, this shutdown impacts far more than what Democrats or their allies in the mainstream media will admit.

Here are just a few examples of areas within DHS that are being impacted:

• The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
• The Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
• The United States Coast Guard.
• The United States Secret Service.
• The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Discussions on reforms, accountability, and oversight across the federal government can, and should, happen without leveraging other agencies as collateral. If this shutdown is allowed to continue, the American people are the ones who will suffer. From a weakened response to disasters to significant travel delays at airports and train stations across the country, lapses in national security operations to increased weakness in our nation’s cybersecurity posture, this shutdown will yield serious consequences that the American people will shoulder. The answer to this is quite simple: it’s time for Democrats in Washington to negotiate in good faith – as the Trump administration has been doing this entire time –so that DHS can return to its important work in service to the American people.
