Foxx Report

Today marks 14 years since we watched the tragedy of September 11th unfold. In Washington, members of Congress observed a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., which is the time when the first plane hit the north tower.

As we remember the innocent individuals who lost their lives in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania, I am heartened by the strength and resolve of the American character. In an unprovoked attack that sought to bring our nation to its knees, the world was reminded instead that ours is a nation of heroes – where people run toward danger for the sake of their fellow man and where a new generation of protectors, knowing full well the risk, chose to answer its country’s call to defend liberty and pursue peace.

Opposing the Iran Nuclear Agreement

Today I voted against legislation to approve the nuclear agreement between Iran and a group of six nations led by the United States. I also voted in favor of legislation that would prevent President Obama from lifting sanctions against Iran.

The House also passed a resolution asserting that the Obama administration did not provide information required for congressional review of the Iran nuclear deal. H. Res. 411 maintains that Congress is required to be provided access to all documents related to the agreement, including the two secret side deals forged between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act.

The Iran nuclear agreement gradually removes the key barriers that prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons capabilities, from growing its economic influence in the Middle East and from continuing its state funding of terrorist organizations that threaten the security of this country and the well-being of our allies. The deal also removes the arms embargo on Iran and lifts restrictions on its missile program.

The United States must continue to stand between Iran and nuclear weapons capability. Unfortunately, the deal presented by President Obama legitimizes Iran’s nuclear achievements and strengthens its extremist regime. This nation cannot risk the continued existence of Israel and the stability of the Middle East in order to win praise for renewed engagement with Iran.

Pope Francis to Address a Joint Meeting of Congress

On Sept. 24, Pope Francis will visit the United States Capitol. On that day, he will become the first leader of the Holy See to address a joint meeting of Congress.

Given the unprecedented nature of his visit, Pope Francis' address will be broadcast live to members of the public on the West Front of the Capitol. Each member of Congress has been given a limited number of tickets for this special broadcast. If you are a constituent of the 5th District and interested in receiving tickets, please visit my website to indicate your interest. Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis with a maximum of four tickets per request.

U.S. Service Academy Day

On Saturday, Sept. 26, I will host a U.S. Service Academy Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clemmons Branch Library, 3554 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. This event will help familiarize students with the application and nomination process for applying to the nation's five military service academies.

North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District has a proud tradition of military service, and it’s a privilege to help some of the area’s finest young men and women contribute to this legacy by attending our country’s prestigious military service academies. High school students of all ages and their parents are encouraged to attend this informative event.

What’s Coming Up

Next week the House will consider legislation to reduce frivolous lawsuits. We expect legislative action related to the revelations of Planned Parenthood’s barbaric practices in the near future as well.

Sincerely,
