On Thursday I voted in favor of legislation that would ban so-called sanctuary cities from receiving certain taxpayer-funded grants from the U.S. Department of Justice. The term “sanctuary cities” refers to nearly 300 communities that have adopted laws or policies that limit the extent to which local authorities can assist the federal government on immigration matters.
By undermining federal immigration law, these communities are needlessly risking the safety of American citizens. The problem is compounded by the Obama administration’s tacit endorsement of these so-called sanctuary policies and its lack of enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws. Under the administration’s policies, thousands of criminal aliens have been released into American communities. This bill is a good first step but more must be done. It’s time to stop President Obama from shutting down immigration enforcement.
Ending Federal Funding for Abortion Providers
With so many Americans fundamentally opposed to abortion, I firmly believe that organizations that perform elective abortions should not receive taxpayer dollars. This week I co-sponsored the Protecting Life and Taxpayers Act, which would permanently end federal taxpayer funding for abortion providers.
Few things demean the sanctity of human life more than elective abortion. One day I hope that a culture of life will take hold in the United States and that all children will be protected under the law. However, until that day comes, it remains my solemn duty to stand up for life. Regardless of the length of this journey, I will continue to speak for those who cannot.
Additional Efforts to Reform VA
This week the House continued its efforts to reform the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs by passing legislation that would give Congress and the public access to key data from the VA.
America’s veterans deserve better than the inexcusable mismanagement we’ve seen over the last few years, and this legislation will help ensure Congress has access to information that is essential to holding the VA accountable. It is critically important that we provide high-quality, timely care for those who have sacrificed so much in service to our country.
Congress will continue its efforts to reform the VA, but the Obama administration needs to change its culture and end the agency-wide pattern of misconduct and neglect.
Protecting American Energy Jobs
This week the House passed bipartisan legislation that provides for the safe management and disposal of coal ash in a way that preserves jobs and encourages recycling. The Improving Coal Combustion Residuals Regulation Act of 2015 would put states in charge of implementing coal ash rules and includes safeguards to protect public health, the environment and jobs.
This legislation is a practical alternative to the EPA’s 2010 proposal to regulate coal ash, which would put more than 300,000 jobs at risk and drive up construction costs.
Uniform Food Labeling
On Thursday the House approved legislation that would establish a new, voluntary certification process at the U.S. Department of Agriculture for non-genetically engineered foods, creating a nationally uniform labeling process. Without uniformity in food labeling, America’s food producers are forced to follow different standards in each state, which is expensive for farmers and confusing for consumers.
The legislation also would require that new genetically engineered foods go through the FDA’s safety review process before they can be sold.
What’s Coming Up
Next week the House will consider the VA Accountability Act, providing urgently needed flexibility for the VA Secretary to remove or demote employees with misconduct or poor performance. The House will also consider the REINS Act, which would ensure that major regulations receive congressional approval before coming into force.
Sincerely,
