Today I voted in favor of legislation that would temporarily bar federal taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood and strengthen protections for babies that survive abortion.
This is a very emotional issue for those of us who value life so much. In these days of 3-D ultrasounds and high-definition screens, it is impossible to hide the humanity of these child victims. They have fingers and toes, heartbeats and organs developed enough that tissue collectors will pay $60 a specimen for them.
Recent undercover videos have raised serious questions about Planned Parenthood's abortion practices and exposed the callousness of the abortion industry toward life. What is heartening is the principle that the truth always comes out. Abortionists can no longer hide in the dark back rooms of their facilities and sell unborn children piece by piece under an illusion that no one will ever know their crimes.
Three House committees have launched an aggressive investigation of these videos. It is my hope that their investigations will shed more light on the organization. Reducing Lawsuit Abuse
On Thursday the House passed legislation designed to reduce frivolous lawsuits in the United States. The Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act would impose mandatory sanctions on attorneys who file baseless lawsuits in federal courts.
Lawyers who bring these cases have nothing to lose under current rules. Without consequences for filing frivolous lawsuits, innocent Americans will continue to suffer. This bill restores accountability to our legal system.
U.S. Service Academy Day
On Saturday, Sept. 26, I will host a U.S. Service Academy Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clemmons Branch Library, 3554 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. This event will help familiarize students with the application and nomination process for applying to the nation's five military service academies.
North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District has a proud tradition of military service, and it’s a privilege to help some of the area’s finest young men and women contribute to this legacy by attending our country’s prestigious military service academies. High school students of all ages and their parents are encouraged to attend this informative event.

What’s Coming Up
Next week Pope Francis will visit the United States Capitol and become the first leader of the Holy See to address a joint meeting of Congress. The House will also consider the RAPID Act, legislation that will reduce red-tape by streamlining permitting requirements on infrastructure and energy projects.
Sincerely,
