Civil society becomes irreparably damaged – to the detriment of all citizens – when law and order is forsaken. We know this as a fact, and we accept this as a fact. As you may recall, in my August 15th newsletter, I took the time to highlight how President Trump has been working to restore our nation’s capital city to glory in the right ways and for the right reasons. Recently, House Republicans passed several bills in support of the President’s efforts, and to help restore Washington, D.C.
Before I highlight these bills, there are a few statistics from Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, that you will be interested to learn about. Since President Trump issued an executive order declaring a crime emergency in the District of Columbia, and increased a strong law enforcement presence, there has been:
- A 53% decrease in homicides.
- A 57% decrease in robberies.
- A 75% decrease in carjackings.
- A 39% decrease in violent crimes.
For visitors to the nation’s capital, and its residents, this is very good news. The following pieces of legislation that are hyperlinked will also make a positive impact as well:
H.R. 4922, the DC Crimes Act of 2025.
H.R. 5143, the District of Columbia Policing Protection Act of 2025.
H.R. 5140, lowering the age – from 24 years old to 14 years old – at which a minor may be tried as an adult for certain criminal offenses in the District of Columbia.
H.R. 5125, the District of Columbia Judicial Nominations Reform Act of 2025.
As Chair of the Rules Committee, I’m particularly proud to have helped advance these pieces of legislation and to help play an important role in supporting President Trump’s law and order agenda. I look forward to seeing these bills progress through the Senate and to the President’s desk for his prompt signature.
A Piece of American History
On February 27, 1776, American patriots faced off against the British army at the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge in Wilmington, North Carolina. At the time, British Loyalists were attempting to rally forces and secure complete control of the state so it could be established as a stronghold against the Continental Army. However, this did not happen – the British suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge and were forced into a humiliating retreat. This battle led to two important outcomes: North Carolina remaining under the control of American patriots and the Second Continental Congress becoming even more emboldened to seek independence from Britian later that exact same year.

Important Update
My latest bill, the SOAR Act Improvements Act, has been passed by, and received approval from, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. This legislation makes targeted improvements to the only federally funded school choice program in the nation to help children from low-income families in Washington, D.C. succeed. School choice has the power to improve the lives and trajectories of our nation’s future leaders – there’s no question or debate about it. Washington, D.C. is a prime example of where school choice is working in our nation, and countless young men and women from low-income families are receiving a high-quality education that will propel them to new heights.
