North Carolina’s Fifth District has a rich tradition of farming and ranching. From tobacco and poultry to soybeans and grapes, our farmers and ranchers produce some of the best agricultural products in the world. As our farmers and ranchers continue to be good stewards of North Carolina’s land, I am committed to promoting our local agriculture economy and actively engaging in the creation of responsible farm policies that honor taxpayers while protecting the way of life of North Carolina’s farming families.
As the Chairwoman of the Rules Committee, I have spent many hours working to pass legislation that is critical to our nation’s farmers and food security. The two most important are H.R. 1, the Working Families Tax Cut Act and H.R. 7576, the Farm Food, and National Security Act of 2026—also known as “The Farm Bill.” H.R. 1, which was signed into law, heavily invests in North Carolina’s agriculture sector. For example, H.R. 1:
- Saves over 40,000 NC family farms from the death tax
- Saves $125 million for NC producers due to affordable crop insurance premiums
- Invests $1.25 billion in agricultural research facilities at North Carolina's public universities
- Invests $2.4 billion in trade promotion to provide NC producers new international markets
- Protects more than $11 billion in NC livestock and poultry products by enhancing livestock biosecurity
The Farm Bill strengthens American agriculture by extending major farm, nutrition, conservation, and rural development programs for five years while also modernizing and safeguarding our national food supply systems.
As a past member of the House Agriculture Committee and member of the 2018 Farm Bill Conference Committee, I have built a record as an agriculture policy reformer and will keep looking for ways to find innovative legislative solutions to ensure North Carolina’s farmers and ranchers are free to compete, adapt and seize opportunities to safely maximize production and meet the needs of America and the world.
