As the granddaughter of Italian immigrants, I am thankful America has always opened her arms to people looking to build a better way for themselves and their families. But today America’s immigration system is broken. It’s not working for families; it’s not working for employers; it’s not working for taxpayers. We must work to reform our immigration system with humane and common-sense policies.
Our first principles on immigration reform should be to secure the borders, uphold American laws, and protect our national security. Throughout the 119th Congress, Republicans have had great success on all fronts. As Chairwoman of the Rules Committee, I made closing the southern border a top priority and was proud to shepherd H.R. 1, the largest border security investment in history, through my committee and vote for it on the House floor. This legislation puts Americans first by empowering law enforcement to build over 700 miles of border wall, deploy 1,670 miles of secondary barriers, expand immigration court capacity, hire critical staff, deport criminal illegal aliens, and more. Americans are already seeing the results:
- Border crossings are down 93%
- 622,000 illegal aliens have been removed from the country
- 1.9 million illegal aliens have self-deported
- 129,143 unaccompanied children lost by the Biden Administration have been found
Another example of my advocacy for securing our southern border is H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, which I was proud to lead out of the Rules Committee and vote in its favor on the House floor. This bipartisan legislation, which was signed into law, empowers our law enforcement officers to detain illegal aliens and allows states to sue the federal government for not enforcing border laws.
As a result of bold legislation, Republican leadership, and the bravery of our nation’s law enforcement officers, the border has been CLOSED, and illegal border crossings have plummeted.
During my time in Congress, I have supported reforms to America’s immigration system including an end to chain migration, funding for a southern border wall, enforcing biometric tracking, halting funding to sanctuary cities, and providing a legal and sustainable status for DACA recipients. America is a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws. Deference to the rule of law is a defining feature of our great country and part of what makes us a beacon of hope for those escaping corruption and poverty in their home countries.
