"Low taxes" are not to blame for America's debt problem

Using the fiscal cliff as an excuse to raise taxes on 940,000 small businesses completely misses the point of why the federal government is in this predicament. Washington's debt problem does not exist because Americans aren't being taxed enough.

Dear editor,

Using the fiscal cliff as an excuse to raise taxes on 940,000 small businesses completely misses the point of why the federal government is in this predicament. Washington’s debt problem does not exist because Americans aren’t being taxed enough. It exists because Washington spends too much and has constantly kicked the can down the road on entitlement reform.

Passing that burden onto North Carolinians by raising taxes will hurt our economy and cost us jobs – two things we can’t afford to do.

We can address the fiscal cliff, a symptom of the staggering $16.2 trillion debt, by cutting spending, growing our economy reforming debt-driving entitlements, and revising the tax code to make it simpler and more competitive internationally.

Republicans in the House of Representatives have presented such a balanced solution, and we need the President to get on board. We can’t fix this alone.

Sincerely,

Representative Virginia Foxx
