No one Party can solve this alone

Dear editor, Republicans in the House of Representatives are committed to averting the fiscal cliff in its entirety. But we need our colleagues across the aisle to join with us to make that happen because no one Party can do it alone. If we are serious about leaving our country in a better place and protecting American jobs, we must build consensus around a solution that fixes government’s spending compulsion and take steps to lower our national debt. No more years of trillion-plus deficits. No more ignoring the need for entitlement reform. Washington’s $16.2 trillion debt problem does not exist because Americans don’t pay enough in taxes. Revenue today is roughly equal to tax revenue in 2006. But now government is spending $1,000,000,000,000 more each year. Simply unsustainable. If we cut spending and reform our debt-driving entitlements in conjunction with growing our economy, we will begin to dig our way out of our national debt burden – of which every family of four claims roughly a $200,000 share. Raising taxes is not the answer, though. Increasing tax rates in the middle of this tepid economic recovery is the exact opposite of what we should be doing if we are serious about making it easier for American small businesses to grow and create jobs. In the face of the fiscal cliff, a responsible, job-centered Congress will lay the groundwork for reforms that and stop the cycle of spending what we don’t have and punting the hard work to our children and grandchildren. I want this Congress to deliver such a solution for the good of our country, and I hope the President and Senate will help.
Sincerely, |
