United States Rep. Virginia Foxx (N.C.-5) took action today to protect the American flag from physical desecration by voting to propose a new Constitutional Amendment. H.J. Res. 10, “the Flag Protection Amendment,” passed the House in a 286 to 130 vote.

“The American flag is the most recognized symbol of freedom and democracy in the world,” said Rep. Foxx. “It honors those brave men and women who fought and are fighting to protect our liberty and way of life. I am proud that we have taken this important step, especially as we are approaching Independence Day.”

Since 1994, there have been 119 documented incidents of flag desecration in the United States and Puerto Rico.

“At one point, there were laws on the books in 48 states prohibiting the physical desecration of the flag,” said Rep. Foxx. In addition, all 50 states have passed resolutions calling on Congress to pass a flag protection Amendment. It is time we carry out the will of the people.”

In order for an Amendment to pass, H.J. Res. 10 will have to be adopted by a two-thirds majority in the U.S. Senate and then ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures.
