Love her or hate her politics, you have to admire her. I’m talking about
Virginia Foxx. She tells you what she thinks and sticks to her guns. Some
people don’t like that but that doesn’t bother Virginia Foxx. She is who she is
and unapologetically so. Virginia Foxx’s story is a great one…a classic
American saga. A woman born into meager surroundings, growing up in rural AveryCounty,
not only getting to college but earning a doctorate degree, pursuing a career
in education before turning to politics. A successful tenure in the State
Senate led her to defy the odds yet again. Now a grandmother, she decided to
make a run for the US House when Richard Burr went for the Senate. Foxx beat
those odds, surviving a slash and burn primary challenge from Vernon Robinson
and other much better funded candidates. Now, at age 61, she’s the first person
from WataugaCounty
ever in the Congress and only the third woman elected from North Carolina. Watching her work those
hallways and alcoves in the Capitol this week, I think fellow House members
will know Foxx is around. Even her opponents will readily agree that Virginia
Foxx has a work ethic second to none. I asked her about her priorities for her
districtand at the top of the list was
serving her constituents. I’m going to bet there won’t be many people in
Congress more accessible to the people they represent than Virginia Foxx. And I
don’t think there will be too many people arriving in their offices earlier or
staying later than Virginia Foxx. She loves this country, she loves the region
she represents, and she loves her new job.
