Dozens of youths were recognized for their work at the 2005 Wilkes County 4-H Achievement Night Program held last week in the fellowship hall of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro.

U.S. 5th Congressional District Rep. Virginia Foxx was the keynote speaker for the event.

Foxx congratulated youths and their parents for their participation in the 4-H program, adding that many useful life-skills are learned in the club.

Foxx went on to say that involvement in such civic organizations builds character and teaches youths how to be productive and courteous citizens. She also urged youths to, when they become old enough, to register to vote.

“You don’t have to be an elected official to make a difference,” Foxx said. “But you need to vote.”

As youths, Foxx told club members they could work for political candidates or serve as pages at a state or national level to learn more about government.

“The page program is an extremely wonderful program,” she said. “I want to encourage you to do that if you can.”

Foxx also told the group, “I want you to contact your elected officials and let them know how you feel about issues.”

County commissioners Fay Byrd, Keith Elmore, Zach Henderson and Luther Parks and Wilkes Schools Superintendent Steve Laws also attended the event.
