The Virginia/North Carolina water authority will receive $1 million in engineering and construction funds from the federal government.

The announcement of the federal funds, secured by Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, and recently passed by the House and Senate, was made during the town’s monthly meeting held Aug. 2 in the conference room. Councilman Robert Andrews was absent due to medical reasons. Reading from a document, Town Manager Bryan Edwards informed the council members of the appropriation.

“I believe this is a direct result of the efforts of the Ferguson Group to lobby on behalf of the Town of Sparta and Alleghany County and the Town of Independence and Grayson County, Virginia for federal funds to support this project,” Edwards said.

The money for the appropriation is funded through the Department of Interior appropriations bill. The Environmental Protection Agency will disperse funds through a State and Tribal Assistance Grant. Continuing to read from the document, Edwards noted members of the water authority met last month in Grayson County.
