Approximately 150 cadets and special guests were honored to hear the evening’s guest speaker, The Honorable Virginia Foxx, Representative of the Fifth Congressional District of North Carolina.

Rep. Foxx praised the members of the Husky Battalion by saying “you all are very bright to be involved in JROTC”. She referred to the award-winning Beaver Creek High School program and how that tradition is continuing at Ashe County High School.

After thanking the active military personnel in attendance for their service, she commended the JROTC instructors for their leadership while active and now as retired. She emphasized the number one role of the federal government is the defense of the nation.

The Congresswoman spoke of her young life in Avery County and living in the “most wonderful country in the world”. She encouraged the young people to stay in Ashe County and if after leaving to return to western North Carolina.

With JROTC being a program that prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles, Rep. Foxx reinforced that philosophy by saying, “Whatever you do, the skills learned in JROTC will be used in all aspects of life. Stay involved in leadership opportunities and make a positive contribution. Register to vote, I don’t care which party you register with, just register and stay involved with public offices.” She further reiterated the importance of living life in a way that creates choices and not to make decisions that will limit those choices.
