North Carolina toughens laws

North Carolina is cracking down on immigration, as Sen. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) cosponsored and voted in support of three bills Sept. 21.

The three bills passed were the Community Protection Act, the Immigration Law Enforcement Act and the Border Tunnel Prevention Act.

“All three bills are important in terms of securing our borders,” Foxx’s press secretary, Michael C. Frohlich, said.

The Community Protection Act extends detainment time for dangerous criminal aliens, Frohlich said.

Instead of only a 60-day detainment period, it can be renewed for another 60 days to keep dangerous criminals off the streets, he said.

The Immigration Law Enforcement Act reaffirms the authority of state and local law enforcement officials to transfer illegal aliens to federal custody.

The Border Tunnel Prevention Act criminalizes the construction and financing of border tunnels.

The U.S. government’s biggest role should be the security of our nations, which is why Foxx voted for these three bills, Frohlich said.

She believes it is not only for our border security but for our national security as well, he said.

Some Appalachian State University students feel the same way when it comes to the arrest of immigrants and other people who flee across the Mexico border to escape imprisonment.

“Why should people be allowed to break our country’s laws, live and work in America, and then be given an out by running back across the border?” sophomore English major Cara B. Crawford said.
