Pearce Godwin Will Now Move To Duties With Senator Elizabeth Dole’s Office

Watauga County resident and Blowing Rock native Pearce Godwin last Friday finished a seven-week internship in Congresswoman Virginia Foxx’s Washington, D.C. office. Godwin, a 2004 graduate of Watauga High School, is a rising senior at Duke University where he studies public policy. “Pearce played a valuable role in my office over the past couple of months,” Rep. Foxx said. “His enthusiasm and eagerness to learn is contagious. I’m excited to see where the next few years take him.”

This internship is not Godwin’s first exposure to Washington politics. In his senior year at WHS he spent a week in DC in the Presidential Classroom academic and leadership development program. This week-long program was tailored to exposing students to “national security in democracy.”

“My internship with Congresswoman Foxx opened a window for me into our nation’s political and legislative process,” said Godwin. “Working for a Congresswoman who cares so deeply for her constituents and works so tirelessly on their behalf is an honor.

“The intern life isn’t always glamorous, but it is an invaluable glimpse of the life of public service. Answering constituent phone calls and seeing all of the mail that they send in reminds me of how participatory our democratic process really is. I’m encouraged to see how interested and involved citizens in North Carolina’s Fifth District are in the legislative process.”

Godwin spent last fall studying abroad in Glasgow, Scotland. His major activities at Duke include being a Freshmen Bible Study leader in Campus Crusade for Christ, President of the Student Study Abroad Committee, and a teaching assistant in Statistics. Godwin starts a second internship with Senator Elizabeth Dole in July, which will last the rest of the summer.
