Statesville Record & Landmark - Foxx Promotes Jobs Bill

U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx was in Statesville on Friday in part to show support and gather information for what is being called the SKILLS (Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills) Act.

Prior to attending a private meeting with Statesville Regional Development officers, Foxx told the R&L that the legislation is aimed at addressing the needs of those seeking jobs in the 21st century.

“The problem with a lot of these federally funded programs is that they train people for yesterday’s workforce,” Foxx said. “We need to focus on training tomorrow’s workforce.”

Foxx, whose 5th District includes Statesville, said some of the other important elements of the legislation is that it will create a system that is more transparent regarding the implementation and results of the various programs and it will allow for more local control in terms of oversight.

Foxx met SRD leaders to share information about how the bill could be helpful for those in Statesville and Iredell County.
