Rep. Virginia Foxx , R-N.C., was recently presented with the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence. The award recognizes her support of policies critical to the success of manufacturing in North Carolina and across the United States.

IN EDUCATION

Jeremy Caudle , a second-year student at Davidson County Community College studying information systems security, was awarded the Annelle Pegg Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, worth $750, was presented to Caudle in April by the N.C. Computer Instruction Association.

The NCCIA, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to improving the quality of computer instruction throughout the N.C. Community College System.

Abigail Owens , a second-year student at Davidson County Community College, was recently awarded with the Gov. Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award for the region. Owens, president of the Student Government Association at DCCC, received $250 for the award during the N.C. Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association Spring Conference in April.

The Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award was established in 2004 in honor of Scott, who served as governor from 1969-1973, and later as president of the N.C. Community College System from 1983-1995. The award is given to students who demonstrate leadership on a statewide level

Benjamin Shoesmith, a 2010 graduate of Calvary Baptist Day School, was awarded the Chancellor’s Achievement Award from UNC Wilmington. In addition, he has been chosen by the NYC Federal Reserve Bank for a summer internship as a risk analyst.

Shoesmith is the son of Gary and Julie Shoesmith of Winston-Salem.

Wayne Matthews , director of The Yadkin Center of Surry Community College, has been awarded the Alice P. Naylor Outstanding Dissertation Award, the highest academic honor that an Appalachian State University doctoral student can receive. His dissertation examined the relationship between spirituality and transformational leadership among North Carolina community college presidents to analyze the qualities of a well-prepared leader.

Matthews accepted the award at the Spring Doctoral Symposium held at Forsyth Tech in April. Matthews completed an Ed.D in education leadership with this successful dissertation.

Matthews’ career with SCC began in 1994 as the coordinator of continuing education in Yadkin County. He was later promoted to director of continuing education and then coordinator of The Yadkin Center, where he has been director since 2010.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina has announced the graduation of Triad Community Kitchen’s CC4 Class: Ellen Ferebee , Donald Hollingsworth , Guy Miller , Hayden Mowery and Stephan Spring .

Triad Community Kitchen, the only program of its kind in North Carolina, uses an innovative curriculum designed in partnership with Catalyst Kitchens. Under the direction of Chef Jeff Bacon , an American Culinary Federation Certified Executive Chef and member of the American Academy of Chefs, area residents who are under- or unemployed, receive culinary training to achieve sustainable, gainful employment.

Forsyth Country Day School recently inducted 15 seniors into The Cum Laude Society. Membership is reserved for seniors whose cumulative weighted GPAs put them in the first quintile of the class after the first semester of senior year.

This year’s inductees are: Sam Tucker Baughan , Stewart Chase Beason , Anna Katherine Currie , Matthew Clayton Faw , Mary Carolyn Fulton , Jacob Cale Hutcherson , Jordan Michael Lew , Ann-Marie Mills , Weston Major Pruitt , Allison Meredith Quinn , Victoria Lee Scarpa , Bradley Graham Schneider , Joseph Douglas Scott , Kristen Nicole Slappey and Meredith Lee Spaid .

IN CIVIC AFFAIRS

?? Harry Hueston , a student at Reynolds High School, recently served as a page for the N.C. House of Representatives. He is the son of Harry and Diane Hueston of Kernersville and was sponsored by Rep. Donny Lambeth, R-Forsyth.

The State House has relied on the service of pages for many years. Pages help deliver bills and amendments for representatives during daily House sessions and committee meetings, offer assistance in individual representatives’ offices, and run errands around the legislature. Pages spend a week at the General Assembly assisting members and their staff and learning about the structure of North Carolina government.

Girl Scout Abby Edwards of Troop 40011 Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont, served as a page for the governor in Raleigh during Girl Scout Week in March.

During her week as a governor’s page, Abby was assigned to work in the governor’s office in a position similar to an intern and managed a variety of clerical tasks. She ran errands to multiple buildings such as the capitol and the legislature building. She also volunteered at a food bank and child daycare.

In addition, Abby toured the State Capitol, Supreme Court, Governor’s Mansion, Legislative Building and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences.

Abby is a sophomore at Reagan High School, where she is a member of the JV soccer team, the Outdoor Adventure Club, and the FCCLA club. She is the daughter of Lisa and Nelson Edwards of Pfafftown.

Members of Congress who maintained a voting record of 70 percent or higher during the 112th Congress (2011–2012) based on key votes selected by an NAM member-led advisory committee received the NAM Award.

IN THE MILITARY

Air Force Airman 1st Class Michael D. Mabry graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Mabry’s eight-week training program included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. After completing his training he earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Mabry is a 2011 graduate of North Forsyth High School. He is the son of Michael and Karrie Mabry of Winston-Salem.

Army Pvt. Trent M. Bullock graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Bullock’s nine weeks of training included instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics and field training exercises.

Bullock is a 2006 graduate of East Forsyth High School. He is the son of Troy and Eugene Bullock Jr. of Kernersville.

Army National Guard Pfc. Douglas T. Beddard graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Beddard’s nine weeks of training included instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics and field training exercises.

Beddard is a 2012 graduate of West Forsyth High School. He is the brother of Daniel Beddard of Kernersville and Matthew Beddard of Winston-Salem.

IN SCOUTING

Gabrielle Green , a member of Girl Scout Troop 40701, earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. To qualify, each girl must dedicate at least 65 hours to planning and implementing a project that benefits the community. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest earned award for Girl Scouts in grades nine through 12.

For her project, Gabriella worked in partnership with Humane Education of Forsyth County, an outreach program to teach kids about the merits of the humane society and general knowledge of basic pet care.

Katherine is the daughter of Bonny and Tom Green Leak of Clemmons.

IN OTHER AREAS

The Windsor Forest Woman’s Club received a proclamation from Mayor Allen Joines proclaiming April 27 as Windsor Forest Woman’s Club Day in recognition of the club’s 50th anniversary. The proclamation was presented to the club by Wanda Merschel, a Winston-Salem City Council member.

A group of 10 women met in 1963 and formed the club. Two charter members, Louise Roland and Faye Fulk , are still active in the club, and fellow charter member Betty Gentry still lives in the Winston-Salem area.
