U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor Visits Alexandria
On March 14, Congressman Eric Cantor visited the Automotive Department at Alexandria for a press conference to showcase the benefits of the Skills Act. Accompanying Cantor were fellow congressional leaders John Kline, Virginia Foxx and Susan Brooks. Visitors were greeted by President Robert G. Templin, Jr.; Dean of the Science, Technology and Business Division Bruce Bowman; Associate VP for Workforce Development Lorinzo Foxworth; and Lead Instructor Keith Brown (General Motor’s ASEP program) who also conducted a tour of the automotive programs. The mission of the Skills Act is to provide a flexible Workforce Investment Fund and more autonomy at the local level which may be used to distribute funds to the most needed areas. Congresswoman Foxx, the author of the bill, said, “Community colleges are one of the major keys to answering the need for skills development in this country.” Foxx also made special mention of NOVA’s current efforts stating “[Northern Virginia Community College] can be a great role model for other campuses and for other programs across the state.” The Skills Act was passed in the house on March 15. |
