NC congressional delegation criticizes Iran nuclear deal

Charlotte Observer

Republican members of the North Carolina congressional delegation on Tuesday heavily criticized the deal the United States and other world powers reached with Iran.

The agreement would curb Iranian nuclear programs with the goal of easing fears of a nuclear-armed Iran threatening the Middle East. In return, Iran would get billions of dollars in relief from international sanctions.

“The president has turned his back on decades of assurances from previous administrations of both parties that Iran would not acquire nuclear weapons. He has willfully ignored 40 years of hostility from Tehran.”

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis

“I have deep concerns about the president's Iranian nuclear deal and anticipate a thorough Congressional review of the agreement.”

U.S. Sen. Richard Burr

“My statement on Iran: I have deep concerns about any nuclear deal with Iran http://t.co/ULcvT5aaeV”

--Richard Burr (@SenatorBurr) July 14, 2015

“Today's announcement ... leaves me deeply concerned that the effort to find a deal has led this administration to a bad one. The announced details thus far ... only increases the chances that Iran will possess nuclear weapons in the future.”

U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry
Lincoln County Republican

“#IranDeal risks our security & security of allies like Israel. My statement on a #BadDeal Congress must disapprove: http://t.co/p611FZTl54.”

--Patrick McHenry (@PatrickMcHenry) July 14, 2015

“With this historic mistake, President Obama has formally blessed the illegal nuclear weapons program of the world's number one sponsor of terrorism, and Congress is all but powerless to block it.”

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson
Cabarrus County Republican

“Mr. President, Alfred Nobel called. He wants his Peace Prize back. #MidEastArmsRace #IranDeal #NoNuclearIran”

--Richard Hudson (@RepRichHudson) July 14, 2015

“Preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is critical to securing peace in the Middle East and protecting U.S. interests, and I remain deeply concerned that this agreement simply delays Iran's path to a nuclear bomb....”

U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx
Banner Elk Republican
