UNC System works to provide education to influx of returning troopsBy: Julie Fertig 7:23 AM CHAPEL HILL – UNC System leaders are continuing their efforts to better serve the state's military. A Board of Governors committee will meet Thursday in Chapel Hill to discuss creating higher education opportunities that specifically target troops. System leaders are working toward enrolling, educating and graduating as many service members as possible. There are a growing number of troops returning home from wars overseas and colleges are now facing the largest influx of veteran students since World War II. To better serve active duty service members, UNC System leaders have placed academic advisors at Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune. At Thursday's meeting, the Military Affairs Committee will explore new options to provide the military with a high-quality, affordable education that leads to a good-paying job. The board of governors' initial efforts are already serving as a national example. Congressional members are looking at steps colleges in other states can take to support the military. A Congressional subcommittee chaired by Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., heard testimony from the system's federal relations vice president. |
