Congresswoman Virginia Foxx Tours Food Lion Distribution Center in Salisbury

On Dec. 17 Congresswoman Virginia Foxx visited the Food Lion headquarters facility in Salisbury for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certified distribution center.

On a tour led by Distribution Center Manager Tim Overcash, Congresswoman Foxx learned more about the complex path groceries travel on their way to Food Lion stores.

"The group began on the salvage dock, where nearly every piece of waste, including plastic bags, cardboard and even splinters of wood from pallets is recycled. The tour then made its way through various areas of the 732,000 square foot facility, including the sub-zero refrigerators, which sit at a cool -5 degrees, and the banana ripening area.

"Quality Assurance Specialist 'Banana' Bob Smith walked the Congresswoman through the ripening process, even breaking a truly green banana in half for her to experience the smell, which, if you’ve not experienced it, is just like a cucumber.
