Omega Construction of Pilot Mountain recently welcomed U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-NC 5th, along with 15 students from the Appalachian State Sustainable Technology and Built Environment department to one of its job sites.

The purpose of the visit was to give Appalachian students who are interested in pursuing a career in construction the chance to tour an active job site so they could see the real-world application of what they are learning in the classroom.

The students were able to hear personal experiences and gain a direct insight about the construction industry from Omega staff members including Barry Hennings, president, Greg Marshall, CFO, Chris Leonard, project manager, and Doug Cosby, superintendent.

At the end of the visit the students were joined by Foxx. The Congresswoman discussed workforce development issues with the students, and the regulation climate affecting the construction industry. Foxx emphasized that while regulations serve a useful purpose, she is committed to streamlining the process to prevent unnecessary delays.

“The faculty of the Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment greatly appreciate the hospitality and time of Omega Construction. From learning about the inner workings of the company to touring the commercial construction site to meeting with Rep. Virginia Foxx, the entire morning was a fantastic experience for our building science students,” said Chad Everhart, chairperson of the Appalachian department.

Omega is partnering with ASU to provide internship opportunities for their Sustainable Technology and Built Environment students. The internship will give students the opportunity to work closely with Omega Project managers and superintendents to gain knowledge and hands-on experience of the entire building process from project procurement to completion. Omega is committed to hiring and developing top talent to be the next generation of project managers and superintendents.
