Panel Calls for More Government Transparency on Path to College

U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) and chairwoman of the subcommittee criticized recent efforts by the Obama administration to improve transparency. For instance, she said, the administration’s new College Scorecard, which highlights key information about colleges and universities, has come under fire for using different methodologies to calculate data, “creating more confusion for students.”

Foxx’s “Preserve Land Freedom for Americans Act” Presented to House Natural Resources Committee

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (NC-05) Tuesday spoke in defense of states’ rights and local interests as she testified on her legislation, the Preserve Land Freedom for Americans Act (H.R. 382) before the House Committee on Natural Resources. H.R. 382 will protect against unilateral presidential land grabs by requiring state input and approval as part of the process whereby federal lands become re-designated as National Monuments.

The letter to Secretary Duncan was signed by Rep. John Kline of Minnesota, the Republican chair of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce; Rep. Virginia E. Foxx of North Carolina, the Republican chair of the higher-education subcommittee; and Rep. Robert E. Andrews of New Jersey, Rep. Alcee L. Hastings of Florida, and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of New York, all Democrats.

Republicans in particular say they like Obama's idea. At a hearing Tuesday on broader higher education issues, Representative Virginia Foxx, a North Carolina Republican who usually has few kind words for the Obama administration, praised his proposal. Three Republican senators -- Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Richard Burr of North Carolina -- have also introduced a bill to return to market-based rates.
