The $305 billion, five-year transportation bill heading to President Barack Obama after clearing the U.S. Senate and House this week includes provisions submitted by U.S. Sens. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., to boost projects in North Carolina. Passage of the bill — with broad bipartisan support — also served to further highlight divisions within the GOP as most opponents were Republicans. In the Senate, presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio were among 14 Re... Read more

WASHINGTON – Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., today released the following statement regarding her vote against the conference report for a five-year surface transportation package costing more than $300 billion that also includes language to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank: “This legislation does not address the growing gap between the Highway Trust Fund’s revenues and expenses, instead expanding that gap to increase federal transportation spending. One of the more remarkable aspects of the bipartisan agreement on a replacement for the No Child Left Behind law, which the House is on course to embrace this week, is the team of authors’ relatively modest level of collective devotion to education policy. This is especially true on the south half of Capitol Hill, which is on the backside of a changing of the guard for House members who make improving our schools one of their big interests. The timing of the rewrite of federal policies on elemen... Read more

As a child, my family’s home didn’t have electricity or running water. My parents, while dedicated and hardworking, were poor with little formal education. Fortunately, I was pushed by the right people – teachers and administrators who wouldn’t let me settle for less than my best. In the mountains of North Carolina, I learned firsthand the power of education and its vital role in the success of individual Americans. Unfortunately, today’s K-12 education system is failing our students. Decades of... Read more
