Iran Agreement Has the Makings of a Grave Foreign Policy Mistake

Undermines the Spirit of Decades of Bipartisan Congressional Sanctions

“The recent Geneva agreement to relax the very sanctions responsible for bringing Iran to the table has the makings of a grave foreign policy mistake."

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) today issued the following statement on President Obama's announced agreement to amend Iranian sanctions:

"Like our friend Israel, the United States cannot tolerate a nuclear Iranian regime, which is why crippling economic sanctions have been imposed against Tehran.

“The recent Geneva agreement to relax the very sanctions responsible for bringing Iran to the table has the makings of a grave foreign policy mistake. It undermines the spirit of decades of bipartisan congressional sanctions which required the absolute cessation of Iranian nuclear activity. Now, in return for Iran marginally slowing the pace of its nuclear ambitions, the regime will have access to billions of dollars in economic relief.

“It’s doubtful softening sanctions in this way will deter the Ayatollah, and this Administration should settle for nothing less than a completely dismantled Iranian nuclear program.”
